Sepia

She wanders the desolate streets alone
Chilling winds muted by the need to fill
An empty bed, a place to lay her troubled head
Restless as the moon hanging high in the black sky
"No stars are out tonight", she said
Fixated on the ground she didn't look to see
Nervous hands trembling to light a match
City lights glowing, reflecting in her eyes
Steadily, she inhales and exhales in slow motion
Surroundings start to swirl and blend
To pretend would be an understatement
A girl so successful at living a lie
That she became as blind as a silhouette
Disappearing into a comforting oblivion
False words wrapped up in a half-hearted smile
"Lay lady, lay, lay across my big brass bed",
Perhaps she'd stay, stay for a while
Until the record stopped revolving
The needle like a scribe to the music of her heart
Lost in the dim lights of a speak easy
Speechless and a bit gone
She counted the hours until daylight
Where she could not face the sun
It only reminded her of colors
That had lost their meaning
Beauty bleeding into a sea of questions
Unanswered
